Just published: The Landscapes of Islamic Merv, Turkmenistan

This article outlines approaches for interpreting the Islamic city of
Sultan Kala (Merv) in Turkmenistan, c. 8th-13th centuries AD, based upon
aerial photographic and satellite imagery. The article explores the
theory and methodology of documenting interpretation (and uncertainty)
in the transcription of aerial photographic and satellite imagery, and
provides a textual and graphic narrative of the development of two
sample areas.
As the final exemplar produced under the original LEAP project, the article feeds from and builds
upon a wealth of digital data held in the related archive hosted by the
Archaeology Data Service http://ads.ahds.ac.uk/catalogue/archive/merv_ahrc_2008/. The article
incorporates the underlying data in an online GIS for users to explore
as they wish and carries several video and audio streams as well as
landscape panoramas.
